Most people start looking for a place to donate furniture about three days before they actually need it gone. The lease is ending, the movers are booked, and there is a perfectly good sofa standing in the middle of the living room that nobody wants to ship.
If that sounds familiar, this guide is for you. It covers what you can realistically donate in Dubai, what tends to get turned down, and how to get it out of the flat without a week of back-and-forth messages.
First, be honest about the condition
This is the part people skip, and it is the reason most donation pickups fall through. Anything you donate is going to end up in someone else’s home. So the simple test is: would you be comfortable giving it to a friend?
A three-year-old IKEA sofa with a clean cover? Yes. A dining table with a slightly scratched top? Usually fine. A mattress that has been in a storeroom through two summers, or a sofa the cat has been using as a scratching post? Probably not.
Things that almost always get accepted:
- Sofas, armchairs and sofa beds with no tears or stains
- Bed frames, bunk beds and headboards
- Wardrobes and chests of drawers that still close properly
- Dining tables and chairs
- Desks, office chairs and bookshelves
- Working fridges, washing machines and cookers
- Kids’ furniture, cots and high chairs in good order
Things that are usually declined: anything broken or wobbly, upholstery with stains or odours, mattresses that are sagging or marked, appliances that do not work, and anything showing signs of bed bugs or termites. It is not about being fussy. A family who receives a stained mattress has just been handed a disposal problem.
Take photos before you call anyone
One clear photo of each item, in decent light, saves more time than anything else. It answers the condition question straight away, and it tells the pickup team how big the job is. Add a photo of the label on appliances if you can, and mention which floor you are on.
Honestly, a WhatsApp message with four photos and the words “JLT, 22nd floor, service lift, free on Saturday” is the perfect booking request.
Sort out building access early
This one catches out a lot of people in towers. Many buildings in Dubai Marina, JLT, Downtown and Business Bay need the service lift booked through building management, sometimes a day in advance. Some want the crew’s names or a trade licence copy. A few only allow moves during certain hours.
If you are in a villa community like Arabian Ranches, The Springs or Dubai Hills, the gate usually needs your name and the vehicle details.
None of this is difficult, but if nobody arranges it, the crew turns up, waits in the loading bay for forty minutes and then has to leave. When you book a pickup with us, we ask for the building name for exactly this reason.
Give yourself a few days, not a few hours
Same-day pickups do happen. In Dubai, if you confirm before about 2 PM there is a good chance a crew can come that afternoon. But if you are moving out, try to book the donation pickup two or three days before your handover. That leaves room for one reschedule if traffic or the lift booking goes wrong, and you are not standing in an empty flat at 9 PM on your last night waiting for a truck.
Dismantling: let the crew do it
You do not need to take the bed apart or remove the wardrobe doors before pickup. A decent crew brings its own tools and will dismantle on site. What helps is emptying drawers and cupboards beforehand, and keeping screws and small parts in a bag taped to the item if you have already started taking it apart yourself.
What about things that cannot be donated?
If some of your items fail the condition test, you have a few options. Small things can go in normal building waste. Bulky items usually need a removal service. The important thing is to know before pickup day, so you are not surprised when the crew leaves the old mattress behind. Ask when you send your photos.
A quick checklist
- Photograph every item and note the floor and building
- Check your building’s lift and access rules
- Book two or three days before you actually need the space
- Empty drawers, wardrobes and cupboards
- Defrost the fridge the night before if it is going too
- Be home, or leave a key with the concierge
That is genuinely all there is to it. If you would like us to handle the pickup, you can see what we collect or go straight to furniture donation in Dubai. It is free for anything clean and usable, and we collect across Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Abu Dhabi.
